A coalition of environmental groups petitioned the White House to set energy efficiency standards for digital currencies, perhaps similar to the ones already in place for appliances, air conditioners, and cars.
The request envisions agencies across the federal government—including the EPA, Department of Energy, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Securities and Exchange Commission—leaping into action, regulating and overseeing emissions and power usage.
